At Casa Descalza, we believe that true relaxation and discovery come when you step away from the ordinary and immerse yourself in nature’s splendor. As avid travelers and design professionals, we’ve always been fascinated by the natural world. Our family’s mission is simple: share our love for nature, travel, and discovery, all while offering a sanctuary where you can connect with the beauty of the Oaxacan coast.
We avoid the mainstream tourist trail, opting instead for deep exploration. Here, you won’t find crowded resorts or predictable activities. What you will find are hidden treasures—unique experiences that bring you closer to the people, the food, and the environment of this stunning region. We invite you to join us, embrace the spirit of “mi casa es tu casa,” and let this magical place unfold around you.
Here’s a quick guide to some of the unforgettable natural encounters that await you during your stay:
1. Oceanic Wonders Right from Your Home
From the comfort of Casa Descalza, you can witness amazing creatures such as dolphins, rays, and, during the winter months, the majestic whales! We can arrange boat expeditions for closer encounters, or simply opt to enjoy them from the house. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for other fascinating creatures like the iguanas, lizards, and every now and then, a shy armadillo, right in our garden.
2. Turtle “Arribos” at Playa Escobilla
A short drive away, Playa Escobilla offers one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles—turtle “arribos.” These mass nesting events happen around 3-4 times a year, with thousands of sea turtles arriving to lay their eggs along the beach. Our last “arribo” saw an astounding 40,000 turtles, all coming and going over the span of just one week. If you're lucky enough to be here during one of these events, it’s a moment you'll never forget.
3. Crocodiles and Mangrove Adventures
Just outside of Mazunte, a visit to “Comunidad Ventanilla” is a must. Here, you’ll take a boat ride through the tranquil mangroves, where you’ll cruise past crocodiles lounging in the sun. The journey continues to an island sanctuary where you’ll encounter other local wildlife, including deer, monkeys, and, of course, more crocodiles!
Another amazing spot is Rancho Margaritas, just a 5-minute drive from the house. This local fish eatery features a stunning wood bridge that takes you over the lagoon, and while you enjoy dishes like camarones (shrimp) or huachinango zarandeado (red snapper), you might be lucky enough to spot a few crocs getting close—just be careful, there are no handrails on the deck! =)
4. Honey, Coffee, and Mezcal at Pueblo del Sol
For a taste of local culture, a visit to Pueblo del Sol offers an unforgettable experience. Take a tour of their apiary, learn about the fascinating process of honey production, and enjoy a delicious lunch made with locally grown coffee and mezcal. It’s a perfect way to combine nature with culture, and a fun way to experience the Oaxacan spirit.
Whatever adventures you choose, we are sure you’ll be enchanted by the unspoiled beauty of the Oaxacan coast and the warmth of its people. As your hosts, we’ll guide you along off-the-beaten-path itineraries that promise unforgettable moments, rich with stories to share for years to come.
Come explore the magic of the Oaxacan coast with us at Casa Descalza!
